Pre-Columbian Art
Pre-Columbian Art refers to
artifacts produced by North and South American Indian cultures before
Columbus discovered the Americas, or Indian artwork without any
western influence. Many Indian cultures flourished and disappeared by
the time of Columbus. Many had distinctive styles or motifs in their
weavings, painted ceramics, and carved stone and jade. It is these
motifs that allow us to identify the work and to a certain extent the
time it was produced. It is also helpful in helping establish that
trade did occur between cultures from Northern Mexico to Chile.
